Mark Rylance’s performance turned Richard from a hard cunning murderer into a sorrowful person who pulled at your heart strings when he was nice, and you pulled at your bowstrings when he was bad. and when he was bad he was very, very bad indeed.
Applause must also go to the set designers who managed to bring the Elizabethan interaction with the audience a step nearer by having the stalls on the stage itself. (Wish I’d known beforehand – perhaps I’ll book it again).
