Legendary stage and screen actor Michael Crawford stars in the premiere of a new British musical, The Go-Between. After opening with previews on May 27^th, The Go-Between plays at the Apollo Theatre London, with an official opening on June 7^th 2016.

Previously running at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, the Royal & Derngate and Derby Live, The Go-Between has received Best Musical Production at the Theatre Awards UK. Featuring a new score by Richard Taylor (Whistle Down the Wind) and a book by beloved children’s dramatist David Wood (Goodnight Mister Tom), this promises to be a hit. In 1970, The Go-Between was made into a film starring Michael Redgrave.

Based on L. P. Hartley’s 1953 novel, The Go-Between follows the story of an elderly man, Leo Colston, who unintentionally unlocks memories of his past, which he had long since left behind. Snapshots of a particularly hot summer in 1900 appear, along with his days spent in Norfolk. When a young Leo spends the holidays with the family of his friend Marcus, he is plunged into an adult world of deceit and illicit passion. Leo becomes trapped in a doomed love affair between upper-class Marian and farmer Ted, acting as the go-between. Soon, he realises that this has shaped his life forever.

Cast and Creative 

The Go-Between features a book by much-loved children’s dramatist David Wood, who has previously adapted Goodnight Mister Tom for the stage, as well as Roald Dahl classics such as The Witches and The Twits. An original score has been penned for the musical by Richard Taylor, who is well-known for composing Whistle Down the Wind. This new musical is produced by Joseph Smith and prolific producer Bill Kenwright, with direction from Roger Haines, who has in the past worked on A Warning to the Curious and The Full Monty.

Michael Crawford stars as Leo Colston in what is his first return to the West End since his performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Wizard of Oz. Crawford is best-known for playing Frank in Some Mother’s Do ‘Ave ‘Em, as well as for creating the titular role In Barnum, for which he won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical. His iconic performance as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera also earned him a Tony Award, Drama Desk and Critics Circle Award. In 1986, he received an OBE from the Queen.

Further casting includes Gemma Sutton (Gypsy) as Marian, Stuart Ward as Ted, Issy Van Randwyck as Mrs Maudsley, Stephen Carlile as Trimingham, Julian Forsyth as Mr Maudsley, John Addison as Henry, Jenni Bowden as Stanton/Leo’s Mother/Eulalie and Silas Wyatt-Barke as Denys. A cast of six boys alternate the roles of Leo and Marcus.

Show Lengths and Times

The Go-Between opened at the Apollo Theatre London on May 27th, with an official opening on June 7^th 2016. The musical is set to run until October 15^th. Performances are at 7:30pm every day excluding Sundays, with matinees on Wednesday and Saturday at 2:30pm.

Show running time is approximately 2hrs and 20mins, including an interval.
